District 12 is the poorest and most remote of the twelve districts in the fictional nation of Panem from Suzanne Collins's *Hunger Games* trilogy.
Located in the coal-mining region of what was once Appalachia, it's home to protagonist Katniss Everdeen.
The district's poverty and oppression under the Capitol make it a symbol of economic exploitation and class struggle: She grew up in District 12, never knowing when her next meal would come.
