Houthis
Ansar Allah movement
The Houthis are a Yemeni rebel movement, formally called Ansar Allah, that controls much of northern Yemen including the capital Sanaa.
Named after their founding family, they emerged from a Zaidi Shia religious revival movement.
Since 2015, they have fought a Saudi-led coalition in Yemen's civil war.
In 2024, they gained international attention by attacking commercial shipping in the Red Sea in response to the Gaza conflict: Houthi attacks have disrupted global shipping routes.
