Hellfire Club
Elite scandal gathering
A Hellfire Club was any of several exclusive secret societies in 18th-century Britain and Ireland where aristocrats gathered for drinking, debauchery, and mock-religious rituals.
The clubs cultivated an atmosphere of blasphemy and libertinism, though accounts of their activities were likely exaggerated.
The name now evokes elite decadence and transgressive behavior, and appears in various fictional contexts—most recently as a group of outcasts in the television series *Stranger Things*.
