rakes

Toothed garden tools

Rakes is the plural of rake—the long-handled garden tool with teeth for gathering leaves or smoothing soil.

Rake also names a dissolute man devoted to pleasure: He was one of those charming rakes who left broken hearts everywhere.

As a verb, to rake is to use the tool, or to sweep across: Machine gun fire raked the hillside.

To rake in money is to accumulate it rapidly.

To rake someone over the coals is to criticize them harshly.
