Golden Spike
Transcontinental railroad ceremony
The golden spike is the ceremonial final spike driven to complete the first transcontinental railroad in the United States, joining the Central Pacific and Union Pacific lines at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869.
The phrase now refers to any ceremonial completion of a major project, especially infrastructure: The governor drove the golden spike on the new transit line.
