Federal forces

National government soldiers

Federal forces refers to military or law enforcement personnel operating under the authority of a national government rather than state, local, or regional authorities.

In American contexts, the term most often appears in discussions of the Civil War, where it designated Union troops fighting to preserve the federal government against Confederate secession.

The phrase may also describe national troops deployed domestically during emergencies, civil unrest, or to enforce federal law when local authorities cannot or will not comply.
