state troops
Governor's military force
State troops are military forces organized and maintained by an individual state rather than the federal government.
In the United States, this typically refers to state defense forces or state guards that remain under the governor's command and cannot be federalized, distinguishing them from the National Guard.
The governor deployed state troops to assist with disaster relief.
Historically, the term also applied to state militias during the Civil War era.
