European art
Western cultural heritage
European art encompasses visual arts produced on the European continent or within European cultural traditions, spanning from prehistoric cave paintings through classical antiquity, medieval religious works, Renaissance masterpieces, and modern movements.
The term often implies the Western canon—works considered foundational to art history: The museum's European art collection includes Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Monet.
In academic and museum contexts, European art typically excludes Byzantine and Russian Orthodox traditions, which fall under separate categories.
