Empress Josephine
Bonaparte's first wife
Empress Josephine was the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress of France from 1804 to 1810.
Born Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie in Martinique, she was a widow with two children when Napoleon married her in 1796.
Their union was passionate but childless, leading Napoleon to divorce her to secure an heir.
She remained influential in French society until her death in 1814, and is remembered for her patronage of the arts and her gardens at Malmaison.
