Edward Hyde
Doctor's dark half
Edward Hyde (1609–1674) was an English statesman and historian who served as chief advisor to Charles II during the English Civil War and Restoration.
As Lord Chancellor, he wielded enormous influence until his fall from favor and exile.
His daughter Anne married the future James II, making Hyde grandfather to two queens.
His *History of the Rebellion* remains a major source for the period.
The name also belongs to the dark alter ego in Robert Louis Stevenson's *Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde* (1886), where Hyde embodies the violent, amoral side of human nature that the respectable Jekyll suppresses.
He has a real Jekyll and Hyde personality.
