Dál Riata
Scottish-Irish realm
Dál Riata was a Gaelic kingdom spanning northeastern Ireland and western Scotland from roughly the 6th to 9th centuries.
The kingdom connected these regions culturally and linguistically, spreading Gaelic language and customs into what became Scotland.
Its legacy is foundational to Scottish Gaelic identity: The kings of Dál Riata ruled from both sides of the Irish Sea.
