Courbet

Nineteenth-century French artist

Gustave Courbet was a nineteenth-century French painter who pioneered Realism, depicting ordinary life and landscapes without idealization.

His controversial works like *The Stone Breakers* and *A Burial at Ornans* rejected academic convention by treating common subjects with the scale and seriousness reserved for history painting. *L'Origine du monde*, his explicit nude, remains notorious.

Courbet's defiant independence influenced generations of artists who followed.
