British colonies
Crown's overseas territories
British colonies are territories that were or are under British sovereignty, administered as possessions of the Crown rather than as part of Britain itself.
The term most often refers historically to the extensive empire Britain accumulated from the 17th through 20th centuries—in North America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific.
The thirteen British colonies became the United States.
Today only a handful of small overseas territories remain.
