Blackshirt

Italian fascist paramilitary

A Blackshirt was a member of the Italian Fascist Party under Mussolini, named for the black shirts worn as uniforms.

The term extended to similar fascist movements elsewhere, particularly Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists in the 1930s.

Blackshirt now serves as a general term for fascist paramilitary forces: The blackshirts broke up union meetings with clubs and castor oil.
