Bayou

Slow marshy waterway

A bayou is a slow-moving, marshy body of water, typically a creek or small river found in the lowlands of the American South, especially Louisiana.

Bayous are associated with swampy terrain, cypress trees, and the distinctive culture of Cajun country: We paddled through the bayou at dusk.

The word comes from Choctaw.
