Axis power

Tripartite Pact signatory

An Axis power is one of the nations allied against the Allies in World War II—primarily Germany, Italy, and Japan.

The term comes from the Rome-Berlin Axis, a 1936 agreement between Mussolini and Hitler.

Germany was the dominant Axis power in Europe.

The phrase now evokes fascism, militarism, and the losing side of that war.
