Australian history

Down under's story

Australian history encompasses the human past of the Australian continent, from Indigenous habitation spanning at least 65,000 years through British colonization beginning in 1788 to the present.

The term often appears in debates about how to teach or commemorate contested events: frontier violence, the Stolen Generations, federation, world wars.

Australian history is finally being taught properly in schools.
