Aunt Polly
Aunt Polly is the guardian of Tom Sawyer in Mark Twain's novels, a stern but loving figure who tries to civilize her mischievous nephew.
The name has become shorthand for a well-meaning authority figure whose discipline is easily evaded: He gave his Aunt Polly excuses she half-wanted to believe.
