Abe Lincoln

Emancipated the enslaved

Abe Lincoln is the familiar name for Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865), the sixteenth president of the United States.

Lincoln led the country through the Civil War and issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing enslaved people in Confederate states.

He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre.

The nickname Abe suggests folksy approachability—Lincoln cultivated an image as a rail-splitter and man of the people: Honest Abe never told a lie.
