ACL injury
Torn knee stabilizer
An ACL injury is damage to the anterior cruciate ligament, one of the major stabilizing ligaments in the knee.
The ACL connects the thighbone to the shinbone and prevents the knee from hyperextending or rotating improperly.
ACL injuries commonly occur in sports involving sudden stops, pivots, or direction changes—basketball, soccer, skiing.
A torn ACL often requires surgical reconstruction and months of rehabilitation: She's out for the season with an ACL injury.
