5150

California commitment code

A California legal code section authorizing involuntary psychiatric hold for up to 72 hours when someone poses a danger to themselves or others.

The number has become informal shorthand for being crazy or mentally unstable: He went totally 5150 on me.

Van Halen's 1986 album helped spread the term beyond California.
