Übermensch

Self-transcending ideal

Übermensch is a concept from Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy, often translated as "overman" or "superman." It describes an idealized human being who has moved beyond traditional morality to create their own values and meaning.

Nietzsche contrasted the Übermensch with the "last man," who seeks only comfort and conformity.

The concept has been misappropriated by various ideologies, most notoriously by Nazi propagandists, though scholars argue this distorts Nietzsche's intent.

In looser usage, it describes someone of extraordinary capability: Silicon Valley types love casting themselves as Übermenschen.
