youngling
Child or cub
A youngling is a young person or animal—the word simply means one who is young.
It has an archaic or literary flavor in general use but gained modern currency through *Star Wars*, where it refers to children training as Jedi: Anakin slaughtered the younglings.
Outside that context, it sounds deliberately old-fashioned or playful.
