write-in

Unlisted candidate's vote

A write-in is a vote cast for a candidate whose name doesn't appear on the ballot, requiring the voter to write in the name manually: She won as a write-in candidate.

As an adjective, it describes such votes or candidates: write-in votes, a write-in campaign.

Write-in victories are rare but occasionally succeed in local elections.
