wolf's bane

Toxic purple flower

Wolf's bane is a highly poisonous plant of the genus Aconitum, also called aconite or monkshood.

The roots and leaves contain potent toxins historically used to poison arrow tips and bait for wolves—hence the name.

In folklore, wolf's bane wards off werewolves: She clutched the wolf's bane as the moon rose.

The purple hooded flowers make it a garden ornamental despite its danger.
