wire to wire
Leading the entire way
Wire to wire describes leading a competition from start to finish without ever falling behind.
The phrase comes from horse racing, where races were once marked by a wire at the starting line and another at the finish: The favorite won wire to wire.
Now used broadly in sports and contests: They led wire to wire and never looked back.
