Third place is the concept of a social environment separate from home (first place) and work (second place)—cafés, bars, barbershops, libraries, and other gathering spots where people connect informally.
The term comes from urban sociology: The coffee shop became my third place after I moved to the city.
Third place also simply means finishing behind first and second in a competition.
