wild thyme
Low aromatic groundcover
Wild thyme is a low-growing aromatic herb found in grasslands and rocky areas, closely related to garden thyme but typically smaller and more sprawling.
It carpets hillsides with tiny purple flowers and has been gathered for centuries for cooking and folk medicine.
The plant appears in Shakespeare's description of Titania's bower: I know a bank where the wild thyme blows.
