white bishop

Pale slanting chess piece

In chess, a white bishop is one of the two bishops belonging to the player with the white pieces.

Each player starts with two bishops—one confined to light squares, one to dark squares—so specifying the white bishop on c4 or white's dark-squared bishop clarifies which piece is meant.

The term distinguishes from black's bishops in notation and discussion.
