wheelspinning

Motion without progress

Wheelspinning is expending effort without making progress—like a car's tires spinning on ice without moving forward.

The term describes activity that feels productive but accomplishes nothing: I spent three hours wheelspinning on that proposal before realizing I was approaching it wrong.

Often used reflexively to diagnose one's own unproductive patterns.
