whale blubber
Marine mammal insulation
Whale blubber is the thick layer of fat beneath a whale's skin, which insulates the animal in cold water and stores energy.
Historically, it was rendered into oil for lamps, lubricants, and other products, driving centuries of commercial whaling.
The term sometimes appears figuratively for excess body fat: He's got to lose some of that whale blubber.
