welfare queen
Lazy recipient myth
A welfare queen is a pejorative stereotype of a woman, typically Black, who allegedly exploits public assistance programs through fraud or by having children to increase benefits.
The term gained political currency in the 1970s and remains charged with racial and class connotations.
It's used to argue against social welfare programs by suggesting recipients are lazy or dishonest: Politicians love to invoke the welfare queen to justify cutting benefits.
The image is largely a political construct with little basis in typical welfare cases.
