water meadows
Seasonally flooded pastures
Water meadows are low-lying grasslands adjacent to rivers, periodically flooded to fertilize the soil and promote early grass growth.
The practice of controlled flooding—common in England from the 17th to 19th centuries—produced rich pastureland for grazing livestock.
The term now often refers simply to any meadow in a river floodplain: We walked through the water meadows at dusk.
