Wash day is the day of the week regularly set aside for doing laundry.
Before modern appliances, washing clothes was labor-intensive enough to require dedicating an entire day to the task, traditionally Monday in many households: Monday was wash day, and the whole house smelled of soap and steam.
The term persists but sounds old-fashioned now that laundry can be done any time.
