warming pan

Bed-heating coal holder

A warming pan is a covered metal pan with a long handle, filled with hot coals or embers and slid between bedsheets to warm them before sleeping.

Common in households before central heating, it has largely become a decorative antique: An old copper warming pan hung by the fireplace.
