warders

Keepers of inmates

Warders are guards or watchmen, particularly those who supervise prisoners in a jail or castle.

The term is more common in British English than American, where *guard* or *corrections officer* predominates: The warders escorted the prisoner to his cell.

Historically, warders patrolled castle walls and controlled access through gates.
