visual joke
Comedy through images
A visual joke is humor that depends on what you see rather than what you hear or read—a sight gag, funny image, or comic arrangement that wouldn't work if described in words alone.
Pratfalls, visual puns, and absurd juxtapositions are classic forms: The cartoon's visual jokes land better than its dialogue.
The term often distinguishes image-based humor from verbal wit.
