versing

Facing in competition

Versing is informal, chiefly American usage meaning competing against: Who are we versing tonight?

It back-forms from "versus," treating the preposition as if it were a verb.

The usage is common among children and in casual sports talk but sounds nonstandard to many adults.

I don't want to verse that team—they always win.
