unknown artist
Painter without attribution
Unknown artist is a placeholder attribution for creative works—paintings, songs, photographs—whose creator cannot be identified.
Museums use it for unsigned pieces; music libraries apply it to tracks lacking metadata.
The phrase acknowledges that someone made the work while admitting we don't know who: The portrait, attributed to an unknown artist, dates to the 1840s.
