unhuman

Beyond our species

Unhuman describes what lies outside the boundaries of human nature or experience.

It can mean not human at all—belonging to animals, machines, or supernatural beings—or it can describe qualities that seem beyond normal human capacity: unhuman endurance, an unhuman scream.

The word overlaps with inhuman but carries less moral judgment; inhuman typically condemns cruelty, while unhuman simply marks difference from the human.
