underwater volcanoes
Oceanic magma vents
Underwater volcanoes are volcanoes that form and erupt beneath the ocean surface.
Most occur along mid-ocean ridges where tectonic plates spread apart, or at subduction zones where one plate slides beneath another.
When underwater volcanoes build up enough material to break the surface, they create volcanic islands.
Also called submarine volcanoes.
