underseal

Vehicle underbody protection

Underseal is a protective coating applied to the underside of a vehicle to prevent rust and corrosion from road salt, moisture, and debris.

Common in regions with harsh winters, it's typically a thick, rubberized substance sprayed onto the chassis: I had the car undersealed before winter.

As a verb, to underseal is to apply this coating.

British usage; Americans more often say undercoat.
