tunnel collapse
Passage caving inward
A tunnel collapse is the failure of a tunnel's structural integrity, when the walls, roof, or surrounding earth cave in.
The term applies to mining accidents, construction disasters, and deteriorating infrastructure.
It can also describe deliberate destruction: Israeli forces caused tunnel collapses throughout the underground network.
Figuratively, any carefully constructed pathway or plan that suddenly falls apart might be called a tunnel collapse.
