truffle dog
Trained tuber hunter
A truffle dog is a dog trained to locate truffles—prized underground fungi—by scent.
The dog detects the distinctive aroma through soil and signals the location to its handler, who then carefully excavates the truffle.
Pigs were traditionally used for this work, but dogs are now preferred because they're less likely to eat the find.
The truffle dog paused, then began pawing at the base of an oak tree.
