tropisms
Directional growth reactions
Tropisms are movements or growth responses of organisms toward or away from stimuli.
Plants exhibit phototropism (growing toward light) and geotropism (roots growing downward).
The term extends to any automatic or instinctive response: Her tropism toward chaos made relationships difficult.
In literature, tropism describes subtle, pre-conscious psychological movements—impulses beneath the surface of awareness.
