triaging

Ranking by severity

Triaging is the process of sorting cases by urgency or priority.

The term comes from medical contexts where patients are assessed and ranked by how immediately they need treatment: The nurse was triaging patients in the emergency room.

The word now applies broadly to any situation requiring systematic prioritization: I spent the morning triaging my inbox.
