The transfer portal is a database system in U.S. college athletics that allows student-athletes to formally declare their intention to transfer to another school.
Once a player enters the portal, other programs can contact and recruit them: He entered the transfer portal after losing his starting spot.
The system has transformed college sports, creating a free-agency-like marketplace where athletes can seek better opportunities and schools can address roster needs mid-career.
