cash for clunkers

Old-car trade-in program

Cash for clunkers refers to government programs that offer rebates or incentives for trading in old, fuel-inefficient vehicles toward the purchase of newer, more efficient ones.

The phrase became widely known during the 2009 U.S. program officially called CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System): We traded in the old minivan through cash for clunkers.

The term now applies loosely to any trade-in incentive program for outdated equipment.
