track switch
Train path changer
A track switch is a mechanical device that guides trains from one track to another, allowing rail traffic to diverge or merge at junctions.
The switch consists of movable rails that can be positioned to direct wheels onto either of two routes: The derailment was caused by a faulty track switch.
Also called simply a switch, or in British usage, points.
