total cholesterol
Combined blood fats
Total cholesterol is a measure of all the cholesterol in your blood—combining LDL ("bad" cholesterol), HDL ("good" cholesterol), and other lipid components.
It's a standard number on blood test results, used to assess cardiovascular risk: Her total cholesterol was higher than her doctor wanted.
The measure is imperfect since it doesn't distinguish between beneficial and harmful types.
